01/20/2012 - Melbourne, Australia (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki, defending champ Kim Clijsters and French Open winner Li Na were among the third-round winners Friday at the Australian Open.
Wozniacki, still trying for that elusive first Grand Slam title, has yet to drop a set in her first three matches and on Friday thumped Romania's Monica Niculescu, 6-2, 6-2.
Clijsters, seeded 11th this year, also had little trouble in a 6-3, 6-2 rout of Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova. The two had met two weeks ago at the tuneup in Brisbane and Clijsters was forced to retire from their semifinal match because of a hip injury to give Hantuchova her first-ever win against the Belgian star.
There would be no gifts this time.
Hantuchova, who reached the semifinals in Melbourne in 2008, mustered only 12 winners and committed 23 unforced errors on Friday. Clijsters ripped 27 winners.
"I was able to, at the important points, win those points and make the right decisions," said Clijsters. "When you're not playing your best, that's what it comes down to -- just trying to play the important points as well as possible. I was able to do that today."
Next up for the four-time Grand Slam champ will be a rematch of last year's Australian Open finale against Li. The fifth seed from China was ahead 3-0 and had won the first two points of the fourth game against Anabel Medina Garrigues, when the Spaniard called it quits. She had suffered an ankle injury in the third game.
"It was really tough, because after she [had her ankle taped] and then she tried to continue [to] play," Li said, "I saw she couldn't run and she started to cry. I have to say so sorry for her, because I know the injury for a tennis athlete is bad thing."
Li, who has had her share of knee and back issues over the past few years, finally broke through last year with her runner-up performance in Melbourne and follow-up title at Roland Garros -- the first Grand Slam championship for an Asian player.
She'll try to avenge last year's loss to Clijsters on Sunday.
"After that match I was feeling I really can win a Grand Slam," Li said Friday. "Of course it was a tough match, so [Sunday] will be just another challenge for myself."
Wozniacki will meet Jelena Jankovic in the fourth round. The 13th-seeded Serb advanced Friday with a 6-2, 6-0 domination of American Christina McHale.
"She's a very solid player," Jankovic said of Wozniacki. "She doesn't really give you anything. I just have to be strong out there, you know, mentally and physically, play my tennis, believe in my abilities and go for it."
Third-seeded Victoria Azarenka also breezed through with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Germany's Mona Barthel and will next meet the Czech Republic's Iveta Benesova, a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Russian Nina Bratchikova.
Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska also cruised into the fourth round with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Kazakhstan's Galina Voskoboeva. Germany's Julia Goerges awaits the eighth-seeded Radwanska after rallying for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Italy's Romina Oprandi.
The third round will conclude Saturday with matches for Serena Williams, Petra Kvitova, Maria Sharapova, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Ana Ivanovic -- all former Grand Slam champions.
Williams, who won five of her 13 Grand Slam titles in Melbourne, will meet Hungary's Greta Arn. Kvitova, the second seed and reigning Wimbledon champ, will have a tough match against Russian Maria Kirilenko.
Sharapova, who won the second of her three major titles at the 2008 Australian Open, will face Germany's Angelique Kerber. The Russian star has dropped just two games over her first two matches. Kuznetsova, a two-time Grand Slam winner, could be Sharapova's fourth-round opponent, but will first take on Germany's Sabine Lisicki, a semifinalist last year at Wimbledon.
Ivanovic, the former world No. 1 and 2008 French Open champ, will play American Vania King.

The Wings will look to offensive powerhouse Pavel Datsyuk and newly appointed captain Nicklas Lidstrom to lead one of the league's most prominent franchises.
Always a threat are the Ottawa Senators, with newly acquired goaltender Martin Gerber from the Stanley Cup champion ,Carolina Hurricanes. The Sens are second best in the rankings at a 7-1 bet, and odds makers at this sportsbook are optimistic that the Ottawa squad will fare better than last season's Eastern Conference semi-final upset to the Buffalo Sabres.

Two playoff teams from 2007 take center stage on the NFL Network Sunday night in a Week 2 NFL betting match-up when the (0-1) New England Patriots betting head south to Florida for a contest with the (1-0) Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
New England HC Bill Belichick couldn’t care less about the way his team plays in the preseason. With a chance to tie last week’s game with the Baltimore Ravens betting, He elected to go for the two-point conversion and outright victory. The conversion failed, and the Pats ended up falling to the Ravens by a 16-15 final count.
New England rolled off twelve unanswered points to give it a chance at securing the victory, but it never threatened to cover the 3.5-point spread. NFL bettors saw this one coming, as they bet the Ravens down from +6 to +3.5 as the week progressed. QB Tom Brady didn’t take part in the Patriots first preseason clash, but could see action this weekend.
His three replacements all put up embarrassing numbers. They went a combined 17 for 33, and threw three interceptions and no touchdowns. The New England defense was encouraging, as they held the Ravens to 2/12 third down conversions and surrendered just ten first downs. That ‘D’ should be bolstered with the addition of former Bucs and Denver Broncos betting safety John Lynch, who could make his Patriots debut on Sunday against his former mates.
HC Jon Gruden had to be impressed with the way his Bucs played on both sides of the ball in their dominating 17-6 victory over the Miami Dolphins in Week 1’s NFL pre-season betting action. Bucs bettors were quite happy with the effort, as they made a mockery of the fact that they were underdogs in the game.
The logjam at the quarterback position didn’t get any easier to separate for Gruden, as all four of his QBs had positive experiences in the first exhibition of 2008. The four combined to complete 28 of their 40 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown, and that was without starting QB Jeff Garcia in the lineup.
RB Michael Bennett had 19 carries and four receptions, totaling 90 yards and a touchdown. Expect to see more of Bennett, Kenneth Darby, and Earnest Graham, as they all compete for playing time with Warrick Dunn in the backfield this season. Defensively, the Bucs recorded four sacks and held the Fins offense in check all day.
First round draft pick Aqib Talib was impressive in the secondary, recording a tackle and two pass defenses in his debut. Don’t be surprised to see Talib in the starting lineup opposite Ronde Barber for the Bucs in ’08.
The betting trends suggest that NFL bettors should be backing the Bucs in this intra-conference exhibition.
These two teams hooked up last year in Tampa Bay, with the Bucs winning that game 13-10. The Buccaneers have only lost one preseason game at home dating back to the beginning of the ’05 preseason. The Patriots have had a mixed bag of results in their recent exhibitions. They have gone 2-2 ATS and SU each of the last three years.
New England currently sits as modest 1-point favorites in this preseason showdown with the ‘total’ now sitting at 34.5.
